Dramatic Rescue

Hello

Just wanted to do a quick post and say thank you to the people who visit my site. Please help spread the word and get others to come log on to doggies411.

Recently my brother asked how to get his dog to stop pulling on leash. The first piece of advice is, don’t let them advance when they pull. Get them to focus on you, reward for lose leash and then advance. also teach them to follow leash pressure rather then go against. I would love to here any other advice from my readers and please send questions.

Thanks

Sorry Ive been so lazy

Well I just wanted to tell everyone who visits my site how sorry I am for not being more up to date and posting helpful dog training tips. If you know me you know that I am currently in school taking IT classes at Kaplan University. I am also looking for work which has been tough here in the Lynchburg area. Anyway please keep sending me your pictures and posts and I will try to work harder.

Merry Christmas!

Click for Roo’s Christmas wish

I have not done alot of posting for a while between school & work I don’t have much time to even spend with my beloved Roo, I even gave up farmville to my friend Karen who is taking care of the farm while I’m away.

Well I want to wish all my family & friends a Merry Merry Christmas. This year is very special for me and if you know me you will know what I am talking about. I am really excited about seeing my niece Shannan and also the baby girl Shaughna. I did see here yesterday and had a great time. I am really excited that she wants to go to Virginia Tech when she finishes school.

I pray everyone is well and together with family and loved ones for this Christmas 2009

Hannah

This is hannah, a dog I trained while with PenPals. She was a hand full to say the least when I first got her but she really turned out to be a great dog. This is an update from her new family whom has had her for about ten months.

I also want to thank Chris (C-Mac) McDanial for working so much with Hannah.

Hannah eating an apple  Somehow time has flown by, and I haven’t sent an update on Hannah in a long time!  I thought I would take a minute to write and let you know how she’s doing.  I don’t know if her inmate handler (Mark at James River) is still in the system, but, if so, please pass this along to him.

Hannah has turned out to be a very funny dog.  She doesn’t always behave perfectly, but there’s just something about her that makes it hard not to laugh at her antics.  Playing fetch is definitely her favorite thing, and she can catch the frisbee easily now.  She loves playing with other dogs, too, and we try to take her to the dog park when we can so that she can do that.  We also just started taking her to a small doggie day care (just 1-3 other dogs) once a week so that she can spend the day playing while we are at work.

One highlight has been watching her learn to swim.  Our dog park has a lake, but all spring she was reluctant to go in, even if the other dogs were swimming.  One day, I was trying again to get her to swim by throwing sticks out into the water for her to retrieve.  You could almost see the light bulb going off in her head when she finally realized that she could swim.  Now she loves it!  In fact, she has really impressed people there because of her retrieving instincts.  A couple of times, people have thrown toys into the lake but their dogs haven’t gone to get them and they have no way of getting them back.  I can take Hannah to the edge, point to the toy, and say “Hannah, go get that toy!” and she’ll swim out and get it even though it has been floating there for 10 minutes or more.

We spent a weekend at a cabin with some friends who have a 1-year-old.

Hannah did GREAT with the toddler.  In fact, we decided they were at about the same developmental level, so they were a perfect match.

She is doing well with a lot of her commands (sit, down, wait, give, leave it, “where’s your tail”, playing dead).  We are still working on her loose leash walking–she just has so much energy that she has trouble slowing down to a walk!  I feel confident that we’ll get there, though, as she has proven to be a very clever dog.

She?s become much more affectionate, and will now slow down enough to

get petted and hugged (which was hard for her in the beginning).

She’s great and we love her a lot!

I’ve attached a couple of pictures.  One is from a hike we took near the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The other is her eating an apple at our annual cider making party.

Thanks!  I’ll try to send updates a little more often!

A trip to AAMR

I went out to All American Mutt Rescue today and helped out with feeding and cleaning out dog lots. There are so many dogs out there it is unbelievable how many dogs are out there. Wish I could bring 4 or 5 of them home to train and play with but I think Roo will be the only new dog around here for a while. I will be returning to help out as much as I can and do some training with some select dogs. When I start the training and remember my camera I will have plenty of pics to post.

tron2I also went by a ladies house today whom has a puppy pit bull mix that she would really like to find a home for. He is a really good little boy and with proper training and socialization with people and dogs will be a great pet.

4 The Love of Dog is moving up!

Roo in her first photo shootI burnt the midnight oil last night writing emails to every dog site I could google and through the hard work of a late night I received an email from Dogtime a blog site that is connected to many other pet blogs and now Doggies411 & 4 The Love of dog can be found there. Whatever is posted on 4 The Love of Dog will be posted on Dogtime. I am in hope that this will get 4 The Love of Dog lots of hits and new people blogging, giving & asking about dog related issues, but most importantly get some shelter dogs in good homes.

Thanks Dogtime
